Don’t make the mistake of cutting this kind of hydrangea down when you’re doing any fall cleanup. And while you’re at it, don’t be tempted to do this in the spring either. Just leave it alone other than pruning back a little to control size, or to cut or pull out truly dead stalks when they get very light colored. And speaking of leaving things alone and fall cleanup, I encourage you to do as little as you can with your perennials. Insects and birds need leaf litter throughout the year, including

If you have Big Leaf Hydrangea… DO NOT prune in Fall. Flower blossoms grow from “old wood” and cutting now will cut away their buds, which will bring flowers next summer. Stay with me, we’ll prune them back in Spring, and have lots of gorgeous new blooms! #hydrangea #pruning #perennials #flowergarden

Hydrangea pruning season is here ✂️ How you prune makes all the difference and it starts with knowing your variety. Paniculata hydrangeas can be cut back hard to encourage strong stems and big blooms, while macrophylla types need a lighter touch to keep their flowers coming. Watch to see the difference and give your hydrangeas the right start for the season ahead.
